STAGES OF SLEEP
The movement of eyes during sleep in humans, mammals and birds is used to divide sleep into two broad types:
  •  Rapid Eye Movement (REM
  • Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM).
WHY DO WE SLEEP
We sleep for a variety of reasons including:
  • Restoration
  • Development
  • Memory Processing
  • Preservation.
DREAMS
Dreams are visual or auditory hallucinations or experiences that take place primarily durimg the periods of REM sleep. Less vivid dreams that resemble conscious thought tend to take place during NREM sleep.

The are two theories about Dreams:
  • The idea that dreams are only physiological stimulations.
  • The idea that dreams are psychologically necessary.
Nightmares:

Nightmares are dreams that are so stressing they usually wake us up, at least partially. Nightmares cause strong feelings of fear, sadness or anxiety. Nightmares can be caused by some medications and traumatic events.

Treatment for recurring nightmares usually starts with interpreting what is going on in the dream and comparing that with what is happening in real life.

Daydreaming:

Daydreaming takes place without any effort, often when we seek to escape the demands of the real world briefly.
